Специално внимание ще бъде обърнато на стилистичната употреба на езика, с цел по-добро ориентиране в различни по вид езикови ситуации и адекватно използване на стилистично маркираната лексика. В предложения курс акцентът ще бъде поставен върху съвременния разговорен български, като няма да се пренебрегва и възможността за запознаване с нивата на официално общуване. Тази базисна част ще бъде осъществена чрез множество диалози по теми, предложени както от учителите, така и от самите курсисти. При разработването на уроците следваме плътно принципите на комуникативния езиков подход.
2. Допълване и задълбочаване на познанията върху българската граматика, което ще даде възможност на студентите да използват по-свободно и ефективно натрупаната в процеса на работа лексика. Запознаване със специфичните за българския език граматични особености и обръщане на специално внимание на функциониращите в езика изключения от граматичните правила.

3. Представяне на оформянето на документи в административен стил. Студентите ще бъдат запознати със специфична терминология и модели на изразяване при съставянето на молба, автобиография, заявление, мотивационно писмо и др. Това ще им позволи да общуват по-ефективно с български институции от всякакъв вид в зависимост от нуждите си и очакванията за реализация в избраната от тях сфера на обществения живот.
4. Запознаване с културата и историята на България. Отдаваме специално внимание на този компонент, тъй като той съвместява както чисто езиковата полза за изучаващите чужд език студенти, така и способността за възприемане на духовното излъчване на дадена нация. L`objectif de la première partie du cours «Bulgare pour les étrangers» est de donner aux apprenants des connaissances de base sur la grammaire bulgare, ainsi que de les faire accumuler du lexique assurant la communication dans la vie quotidienne, sociale et professionnelle. Chaque unité de classe comprend plusieurs dialogues, du vocabulaire, des exercices de grammaire et des activités de compréhension écrite et orale. Au cours du travail on utilise l`anglais, le français et le russe comme langues intermédiaires.

Le cours de langue à distance «Bulgare pour les étrangers» renferme quelques enjeux fondamentaux:

1. Fournir un étayage, un accompagnement et une évaluation adaptés aux apprenants, et favoriser le développement de l’expression orale du bulgare dans le style soutenu et familier. Ainsi attribuons-nous une place particulière à l’usage stylistique de la langue bulgare afin qu’on puisse intégrer des différentes formes cibles sur la variété des actes de langage et s’approprier l’emploi du vocabulaire stylistiquement marqué. Le cours de bulgare que nous vous proposons portera en particulier sur l’apprentissage du bulgare moderne sans exclure l’éventualité de perception de divers standings conversationnels du bulgare soutenu. Cette partie de base sera réalisée à travers des multiples situations langagières et interactives suggérées par les enseignants ou les apprenants. Les cours sont étroitement élaborés suivant la méthode communicative bulgare.

2. Compléter et approfondir les connaissances acquises sur la grammaire bulgare permettant aux étudiants d’utiliser librement et efficacement le potentiel lexical recueilli au cours de l’apprentissage. Découvrir les particularités grammaticales propres à la langue bulgare et prendre en considération les exceptions aux règles de grammaire bulgare en vigueur.

3. Présenter la rédaction des documents administratifs. Les apprenants seront mis en garde sur la terminologie spécifique et les différents modèles pour la rédaction d’une demande, un CV, une déclaration, une lettre de motivation etc., ce qui leur permettra de communiquer réellement avec des diverses instances bulgares, selon leurs besoins et leurs attentes de réalisation dans le secteur choisi de la vie sociale.

4. Découvrir la culture et l’histoire de la Bulgarie. Nous mettons l’accent sur cette partie, car elle inclut aussi bien le profit linguistique des apprenants de langue étrangère que les capacités de connaître la fascination spirituelle d’un peuple. De même, nous considérons que l’approche des oeuvres d’art bulgares dans tous les genres enrichira la culture générale et élargira le panorama intellectuel des étudiants en bulgare. Dans ce contexte, nous sommes fiers de proposer des chefs-d’œuvre culturels ayant en particulier une énorme valeur artistique et riches de significations. Der Kurs „Bulgarisch für Ausländer“ (Stufe 2), den wir in Form von Distanzunterricht anbieten, umfasst folgende Bereiche:

1. Festigung und Vertiefung der Kenntnisse des gesprochenen Bulgarisch in formellen und informellen Situationen. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird dem Sprachstil geschenkt, wodurch die bessere Orientierung in unterschiedlichen sprachlichen Situationen und die angemessene Verwendung von Wortschatz mit einer bestimmten stilistischen Färbung ermöglicht werden. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der gegenwärtigen bulgarischen Umgangssprache, berücksichtigt werden aber auch unterschiedliche Ebenen des offiziellen Umgangs. Die Arbeit findet auf der Grundlage einer Vielzahl von Dialogen statt, deren Themen sowohl vom Kursleiter als auch vom Kursteilnehmer eingebracht werden. Bei der Ausarbeitung der Lektionen folgen wir den Prinzipien der kommunikativen Methode.

2. Erweiterung und Aktivierung der Kenntnisse der bulgarischen Grammatik. Den Teilnehmern wird eine freiere und effektivere Anwendung des erworbenen Wortschatzes ermöglicht. Die grammatischen Besonderheiten der bulgarischen Sprache werden unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Ausnahmen und Sonderregeln vermittelt.

3. Beschäftigung mit Form und Aufbau offizieller Schriftstücke. Die Teilnehmer lernen die spezifische Terminologie und Ausdrucksweise von Dokumenten wie Anschreiben, Lebenslauf, Motivationsschreiben u.a. kennen. Dies soll ihnen – je nach ihren persönlichen Bedürfnissen und Erwartungen – einen effektiveren Umgang mit den bulgarischen Institutionen jeder Art ermöglichen.

4. Vermittlung der Kultur und Geschichte Bulgariens. Wir legen besonderen Wert auf diese Komponenten, da sie den Teilnehmern neben dem reinen Spracherwerb die Bekanntschaft mit der Mentalität und Tradition des Landes ermöglichen. Wir sind der Meinung, dass das Kennenlernen von Werken aus dem Bereich der bulgarischen Kunst und Kultur den geistigen und kulturellen Horizont der Studierenden erweitern wird. Wir verfügen über Unterrichtsmaterial von hohem inhaltlichen, aber auch künstlerischen Wert und verwenden zudem auch vielseitige und leicht zugängliche Quellen aus dem Internet wie virtuelle Bibliotheken, Galerien, Museen, Seiten mit Folklore-Kunst, zeitgenössischer Musik, Filmen u.a.

What do you mean "an online course"?

Learn Bulgarian on-line

This course is taught online, interactively. It is going to be just like the usual tutoring sessions (if you did that before), except the 2 persons are not in the same room, but connected via Internet, namely by a voice conference application. Don't be terrified! A lot of school children can cope with that in many places of the world. For those, who prefer traditional lessons in a classroom, we provide both intensive and long-term individual practical classes in Bulgarian language for foreigners. We have three large, air-conditioned and fully equipped with whiteboards, desks, chairs and computers language laboratories. The school is located in the centre of Plovdiv.

What about the teaching method?

It's both classical and modern.
Maybe the most important thing when you learn a foreign language is to understand how it functions. That is called grammar and it is the main objective of the course. However, this is not meant for you to become a grammar expert. Also, we'll insist on vocabulary building, tests, conversation. We'll combine theory and practice.
Usually, the first part of the session is reserved for a homework discussion and the latter part for the new lesson.
You will not find here the present course format so common for EFL teachers, where amateur teachers transform a language course into a phrase book fiasco, and almost all of them cannot even connect to the students' mother tongue!
Also, the homework and tests will be submitted in DOC files and we'll exchange files by transferring them via Internet.

What materials can you offer?

Learning Bulgarian on-line

Most of our foreign students are interested in conversational Bulgarian as they are engaged to a Bulgarian partner or/and own properties in small towns and/or villages where people do not speak English. And it is difficult to get by if you cannot speak with the neighbours or order a meal in the restaurant. It is almost the same even in the big cities like Plovdiv, though youngsters usually speak English, but Bulgarian is a must when you have to deal with institutions and even private banks. That is why we have chosen to use the most appropriate textbook for them, based on the so called Communicative approach. The beginners` textbook is designed for 120 group lessons, but we usually complete it in 80 lessons, because we work much faster (and much better) on one-to-one basis. It covers the first two levels (A1 and A2) according to the European Language Portfolio (ELP). The price of the textbook (including 2 CDs and a dictionary) is 13 EUR only, and the shipping to Europe is 8 EUR and to North America - around 10 EUR.

Do you know a good dictionary?

You can download for free the best PC dictionary from here. Its online version is available for MAC users. There are two English-Bulgarian and Bulgarian-English dictionaries for MAC, you can find them here and here. Also, if you are running Windows 95, 98, ME or XP, please download for free this software for your Latin keyboard, so that you can type in Bulgarian. This is the so called Bulgarian phonetic, and here you can see where the Cyrillic letters are on your keyboard. Windows Vista, Windows 7 and MAC support Bulgarian phonetic, so you only have to add it.

Do I need to learn anything before I start out?

Free Bulgarian lessons

No! This course starts from scratch at real beginner level, assuming no previous language knowledge. However, you will have to remember the bases of the grammar you learnt in school. We will assist you with that, anyway.

Do I have to know grammar?

Yes, to a reasonable extent. Do not let yourself be fooled by "modern", more "digestible" language-teaching methods that try to avoid grammar and rules. Grammar is the backbone of a language, its "user's guide". Learning about grammar and rules offers you a valuable shortcut. There are no other shortcuts, unless you only want to acquire a number of common phrases and to learn how to count to ten. Initially, you must have a fair idea about the basic grammar of your mother tongue language (be it English or not), so you don't have to be a proficient. Anyway, assistance on grammar issues (explanations) will be offered continuously. Also, you can download for free a good Bulgarian grammar for beginners, written in English, from here.

Which is the contact language?

Intermediary languages are English, German, Polish, Portuguese, Armenian and Russian.

How much English do I have to know?

If you are not a native English speaker, your English must be good enough to understand what is taught. An intermediate level of English will do.

How long does a session last?

One lesson is 60 minutes, but you can take 2-3 in a row.

How frequent will my sessions be?

Actually, it's up to you. You are the one to choose how many lessons a week you will have. Considering the time zone differences and the common busy schedule of the students, two sessions per week is the most popular choice. We provide intensive Bulgarian course as well, especially designed for foreigners, who need to learn the lingo quickly and can afford an intensive tuition. Bear in mind, you will need enough time between sessions to settle the newly learnt information.

How much time do I have to study a week?

It depends a lot on the student's personal abilities. Some students learn on the spot. For most students, the personal study takes about double the number of session hours. If you have 2 sessions per week, you will have to reserve about 2-3 hours between sessions for personal study.

What times are you available?

In principle, we'd be available between 07:00-23:00 Bulgarian time. That is 05:00-21:00 GMT(UT) Nov to Mar, and 04:00-20:00 GMT(UT) Apr to Oct.

Is this technically possible?

Yes, people have been doing online teaching/learning for years.

Do I have to be a computer geek to handle an online course?

Not really. However, you must have some basic knowledge about computers and computer files. You'll type on DOC files, you'll use the audio capabilities of your computer, you'll transfer files.

What "technology" do I need?

Nothing too fancy for these days.
Even a second-hand computer will do. A minimum of 1GHz processor, 256 MB RAM, Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7... Anything above is great. Please check Skype system requirements here.
A decent Internet connection. A cable connection is a comfortable minimum, but sometimes even a phone modem connection works well enough. It`s good to test your Internet connection here and here.
A sound board, a headset (microphone plus headphones), or separate speakers. The headset is strongly preferred, because the speakers cause an annoying echo effect.
If you don't have those at your house, you can go to an Internet cafe.
You also need Microsoft Word (any version) or Open Office and Skype (a piece of software especially designed for voice conference over the Internet).
There also are big chances for us to use the Google Talk, Logitech Vid, MSN, and Yahoo Instant Messenger (YIM) as a backup audio communication tools. The YIM is sometimes better at transferring files.

Is it free?

Obviously, not.
So many people actually believe that they can have tutoring for free! If only they could explain why would a teacher spend many long hours tutoring, consuming Internet traffic, providing professional materials, preparing lessons, correcting homework and tests, all for free? Misunderstanding? Naiveté? How can someone believe that such a professional effort would come gratis! You can't even get a loaf of bread for free, let alone such a rare service! You may be wondering whether there are ways in which you can learn the Bulgarian language free of charge. Children in Bulgaria are doing it every day. You could do it like they do ... which is to live in the culture for two or three years with no other means of communication. Learning a language requires time and effort. Ignore all those learn Bulgarian free language sites on the Internet that promise to teach you a foreign language within 10 days - or the hundreds of language sites that offer free language courses (there’s always a catch to this one), or the countless companies claiming that you can become fluent with no real effort. Don’t be fooled by these false claims. It is rare occasion to learn Bulgarian free. If these claims are true, then why does it take foreign language students years to speak and write fluently? There are no shortcuts to learning any foreign language, including to learn Bulgarian free. Sometimes you may wish there were some kind of magic to make you fluent overnight, but unfortunately there isn’t. It takes hard work, motivation, and discipline to succeed.

How much is it?

The tuition fee for one one-to-one lesson is 12 EUR per lesson (60 mins), Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Bulgarian time. The fee is 14 EUR during the holidays and before 9:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. Bulgarian time. Discounts for individuals: the first online lesson is always free of charge! 50% discount for family members and 20% discount for groups. 10% discount for a prepaid package of 50 lessons, 15% discount for a prepaid package of 75 lessons and 20% discount for a prepaid package of 100 lessons.
Warning: The price is likely to be more and more "European Union", meaning going up.
(Students who have already started will keep their current price deals. This prerogative is cancelled in case the student takes a break of more than 6 months during tuition.)

Why does it cost so much?

Colloquial Bulgarian course on-line

The person who would ask such a question obviously is not familiar with tutoring prices. They can vary between 20 - 65 €/hour.
When assessing the fair price of a tutoring hour, you must consider some factors, among which: the tutor's competence (Is that an experienced teacher or a needy student? Is that a professional or an amateur?), the rarity of the specialists (tutors) in that field, the teacher's ability to handle modern technology and provide online tutoring, the tutor's supplementary expenses (such as Internet traffic), the time zone differences leading to unusual teaching times for the tutor.
By all these factors, the "fair price" would break the upper barrier!
For an easier calculation of a fair price, consider the average salary of a teacher in EU or North America, of about 1500 - 2000 €/month, and the average number of working hours per month, about 80 - 100. The average "fair" wages a teacher would get is about 19 - 20 €/hour.
However, a freelance tutor's schedule is scattered and not constant and less loaded than the norm of a regular teacher. An adjustment coefficient of 1.4 would be reasonable, so the average "fair" fee for this sort of private tuition would be around 26 - 28 €/hour! You can take a look at the charges for an individual lesson in English as a foreign language in the UK and the USA.

Why does it cost so little?

We can afford now to offer this small price.
So, consider it as a promotional price. It will rise in the near future, as Bulgaria has joined the EU and the "Bulgarian" prices must match the "European Union" prices.

Are there cancellation penalties?

Lesson cancellations must be made at least 24 hours prior to the time of class. Cancellations made less than 24 hours will be charged 100% of the class rate.

What are the payment options?

It's not easy to find reasonable ways to transfer small amounts of money. These usually imply significant expenses per € sent, which decrease with the increase of the transferred amount. However, students outside Bulgaria can pay via PayPal, bank transfer, postal order or Money Gram and Western Union. Students from Plovdiv pay after every lesson! Distant students have to pay in advance the charge for ten lessons only.

I cannot start out immediately. Will this be available later?

Yes.
However, there is a danger of psychological nature: if you give up the first impulse to begin learning Bulgarian, it is very likely for it to never come back again. And I do mean that. The principle is "A Postponer becomes a Quitter".
In addition, the price will probably be higher at the time you decide to start out.

What on earth is that? :-))
Of course, we know what that is. It is one of the most idiotic things I've seen about language learning! In fact, there even are web sites promoting this nonsense.
We are always amazed to see people think that learning a foreign language is like learning how to shoot pool! "Language exchange" means that 2 people of different mother tongues try to teach each other their respective languages. Above all, they don't have to pay for professional teaching, so it sounds fair enough.
However, that is a sophism. Most people don't realize that teaching a language is as complex as teaching any science: physics, mathematics, biology... Firstly, one must have extended specialized knowledge on the subject. Yet, a lot of people, even of college level education, simply cannot see their mother tongue as a foreign language (i.e. with the eyes of a foreigner). Secondly, one must have the specific formation of a teacher, for them to know how to organize the materials, how to prepare lessons, how to correct mistakes, how to insist on certain issues, how to asses the student's progress... Now, we wonder, is everyone a language teacher?
This chaotic action soon ends up in disaster. The 2 parties get bored and they realize they haven't learned but 10-20 phrases. Their greatest achievement is that they have paid nothing. But they get what they pay for: again nothing!

Can I learn Bulgarian without a teacher?

Maybe (just maybe), if you are a genius, you can try to learn English or French on your own. There are good materials to learn some languages, but... not Bulgarian. So, frankly, you don't stand a chance, genius or not.

I want to have conversations, to talk to people in Bulgarian. Do you offer a Bulgarian conversation course?

This is an intensive course and includes conversation exercises too. However, we focus on the structure of the language (grammar) and vocabulary. Logically, you cannot have conversations, if you don't know how the language functions or don't have enough vocabulary. Conversation comes afterwards.

How can I find a local Bulgarian tutor (in my town)?

You will not be able to. We are so few, trust us... ;-)
And if you don't, to make it more convincing, let us put it this way: there are bigger chances for you to be hit by an atomic bomb in the next 10 seconds than finding a competent tutor in your town! Count to 10. Has it hit you? It hasn't? Now do you see what we mean?

Can I learn Bulgarian from those online resources?

We've checked those out. They are even worse than the printed materials for learning Bulgarian. Mastylo Language School does not offer you to study the language with the help of a computer! We consider irrelevant the programs and textbooks, offered by many web sites and publishers, trying to convince you of the possibility to learn one of the hardest languages on your own. We offer you to study in the tested old-fashioned way with the guidance of our qualified tutors.

Are you offering group courses too?

We could do that too, but there are some problems:
1. As Bulgarian is not a widespread language and the number of potential students is not so big, it would be difficult to form a group of students.
2. The students would come from various countries, that is from various time zones, so an agreement on the schedule would be difficult to make.
3. Above all, students are differently talented for languages, might have different starting levels, different motivations and different levels of English (which is the contact language).

We provide mainly individual lessons, though we teach so many foreign students. It`s possible technically to teach even on-line on Skype up to 6 students, but we do prefer to work in a one-to-one basis, except with couples and families, of course.

"My wife Wendy & I bought a holiday home in Bulgaria in 2005 and quickly realised that although it was close to a ski resort (with English spoken widely), the local village folk spoke none whatsoever! “I come from a language background. I'm American and work as an Akademischer Rat (like an assistant professor) at a German University in the field of computational linguistics. It happens that in our department we have a lot of Bulgarian students. And it also happens, by some twist of fate, that I have a Bulgarian girl friend. So, I've interest in learning Bulgarian for a number of years. In the summer of 2008, I had a free couple of weeks, with my kids and girl friend all being otherwise occupied. So I searched the Internet for language schools in Bulgaria, and landed on the Mastylo school in Plovdiv. I wrote to Boris, and he wrote back quite enthusiastically that the school could provide me with lessons and even find me a very economical and friendly place to stay. But the best part was that Boris offered me a teacher, Ivanka Petrova, who was a PhD candidate in computational linguistics at the University of Plovdiv. Ivanka turned out to be a real language expert, with a great ability to inspire. So after my trial lesson, I knew I would like it and I signed up for the package of 50 lessons. I worked hard during these lessons, and learned a lot thanks to Ivanka. Just because I come from a language background doesn't mean that I have a magic ability to learn languages. There are beautiful unspoiled natural areas such as the caves at Trigrad and Yagodina and the wonderful bridges (Chudnite mostove). It's a challenge to get around these areas, but the people are extremely friendly, especially if you can speak a some Bulgarian. I had the most fun at a restaurant in Shiroka Laka, where I was invited to a table with a couple of families with grandparents and grandkids. My Bulgarian got a real workout that day, and I got another workout when I got back to my lessons, as Ivanka made me tell all about my experiences in Bulgarian. So, I can highly recommend language lessons at Mastylo, and I hope I will make it back there myself someday.”

Do you have a previous linguistic background/experience (including learning another foreign language)? What?
In the past I have taken short courses in French and Spanish before going on holiday to these countries. Before going to Greece for the first time I learned the alphabet and a few phrases regarding food and drink.

Why did you want to learn Bulgarian? What was/is your motivation?
My husband and I have bought a house in the Rhodope mountains and visit 5 or 6 times each year. Although we have Bulgarian friends who speak English it would be nice to be able to speak to them in their native tongue without having to play a game of charades. Also none of the people in the village speak English and it would be good to be able to communicate with them. One day soon we are hoping to retire to Bulgaria and it will be essential that we can at least understand the basics of the language.

I tried to learn from textbooks, I have about 4 different ones but couldn’t get myself motivated to sit down and learn regularly. I also tried interactive CD’s but I only learned words and no grammar.

Yes, although I think it might have been easier for me if there were more English explanations in it but I do realize that it has been written for all foreigners not just English.

Has the course been clear? Logically structured?
I think the course is good because it leads you through the grammar and gender and gradually builds up, giving practice on previous sections to reinforce the learning.

Is a scientific (structured) approach more efficient in learning/teaching a language? Would this method be the right one, as opposed to other "modern" "fast-food" methods?
This approach is better for me because I like rules to work to and refer back to. My memory isn’t what it used to be so a “fast-food” method would not suit me.

Is an online course working?
It works for me because I don’t have to go out on a cold dark night yet I can have regular lessons and I know that if I have a problem when doing homework or just trying to study on my own, Boris is only an e-mail away, and only too happy to help.

As I’m learning from a book I think the teacher is there mainly as a guide and to keep the motivation going but he does need to be able to track the learning and know exactly at what stage everyone is at so does need to be well organized.

Yes, we have good audio contact.

How would you compare this course with your possible previous experiences? (mainly if you tried to study Bulgarian before)
It’s much better than trying to learn on your own with a book as I soon became bored with that and there’s no one to ask if you don’t understand a particular part. Also with a book, even if you have an audio CD with it, you can’t be sure you understand where the stress should be on the words. Learning online is enjoyable because you have someone to interact with and it’s better than being in a class because you’re getting individual attention.

How complex do you perceive the Bulgarian language is?
I don’t think it’s any more complex than any other foreign language once you learn the different alphabet, it’s the gender that I find most difficult as we don’t have this in the English language.

Is this course guiding you satisfactorily through the Bulgarian linguistic jungle?
Yes, I think it’s a well structured course.

Could it be learned "without a (competent) teacher"? Or without good-quality materials? (aiming for the medium level)
I couldn’t learn it without a teacher or good quality materials.

I think grammar is important, especially if you want to communicate clearly with Bulgarian speakers. My ambition is not to speak “pigeon Bulgarian”, but this might be just a dream.

What aspects of the Bulgarian language, as studied so far, have you found to be the most difficult/tricky/unusual/weird?
The gender is the most difficult for me as it’s not just the subject that has a gender but almost everything that describes it as well.

When I first contacted Mastylo School to arrange Bulgarian lessons I prayed that I would have a woman teacher as I find some male teachers pompous and intimidating. Imagine my dismay when I received an e-mail telling me my tutor was called Boris! Well, I needn’t have worried, Boris is so down to earth and funny, it’s a pleasure being taught by him. He never makes you feel stupid however many questions you ask, even if you ask the same questions over and over, he has the patience of a saint. Occasionally, when I have found the homework difficult, I dread the lesson because I’m sure I’ve done it all wrong but within a couple of minutes of the lesson starting Boris has me feeling much better and I finish the lesson feeling much more confident. It is necessary in the long term and I am enjoying it now, although the course did seem a little too rigid and structured in the early stages, which I found frustrating because I wanted to learn basic Bulgarian conversation ahead of my wedding and only had a few months in which to learn. We focussed a lot on grammar rather than conversation in those early stages and I did not have the conversational skills I was hoping for in time for the wedding. Now I have decided to keep up with the lessons after the wedding I am glad we did do the grammar and it is absolutely necessary for a proper grasp of the language, no matter how much I might hate it!

What aspects of the Bulgarian language, as studied so far, have you found to be the most difficult/tricky/unusual/weird?
Imperatives, the apparently random nature of some conjugations, past and future tense, most grammar really.

Boris is a fantastic teacher and brings humour and patience to the one-on-one lessons. If we are getting bogged down in grammar he will skip ahead to a more enjoyable section and come back to catch up on the grammar later. More listening exercises might be useful to get used to hearing spoken Bulgarian. I would unhesitatingly recommend Mastylo School to anyone outside of Bulgaria wishing to learn the language via Skype. The one-on-one lessons are focussed and fun and Boris is a patient teacher with a great sense of humour. Textbooks and audio CDs were sent to me soon after starting the lessons and it has been easy to keep up and ask about any uncertainties via Skype during my weekly lessons. I started the lessons before getting married to be able to speak to my wife's Bulgarian family and have kept the lessons up since then because learning a second language has been so rewarding and enjoyable.

I know of someone who was able to learn Bulgarian through a self-teaching method, but for a non-linguist like me a knowledgeable instructor is essential. As a lazy student, I also require deadlines and homework due dates to motivate me.

Yes. Since it is impossible for me to attend traditional classes in Bulgarian and I cannot afford the personal lessons offered by in-person schools, this is a very effective method that allows me to fit the lessons into my time.

I learned very little beyond some basic vocabulary from the CDROM and the self-teaching book. The book course may have been fine, but the self-teaching method is not effective for me, personally.

I found Spanish to be a fairly straightforward language and French not terribly difficult at a basic level. Bulgarian is a logically structured language, but its significant differences from English make the process of learning grammatical details a little more difficult than learning the Romance languages.

Yes.

As I wrote in the answers to previous questions, I think it is possible for some people to learn without a teacher, but I cannot. Additionally, self-taught students are unable to ask questions when a lesson is unclear.

I understand Bulgarian grammar better than my native wife, but use it less accurately than my 3 year old daughter. Is grammar necessary? No, neither my wife nor my daughter needed to learn grammar to use it properly, but for a student learning Bulgarian as a 2nd language I cannot imagine how the lessons could be structured without it. Personally, I must understand why a thing is if I hope to remember it, as I am unable to learn “by rote.”

Is this intensive course too fast?
Since it is a private lesson, the speed of progress is set by me.

I was extremely satisfied with the quality of the lessons I had with both Boris and Erna. They are the best teachers of Bulgarian I've found.

The textbook used by Mastylo is the best I've found, but unfortunately I simply don't think there is a good textbook available for learning Bulgarian. Certainly when compared to materials available to English-language learners of French, Spanish, German, etc., the Bulgarian materials are very poor. This is why Boris and Erna are so necessary for supplementing the available textbooks--and why they should write a textbook of their own!
